I was reading about UK travel technology the other day and wanted to check I have understood it properly, because most of what I find is either about the big global booking platforms or written by vendors promoting their own products. Here is what I have pieced together, and I would appreciate anyone correcting me.

UK TravelTech seems to cover a wide mix of businesses, including online travel agents, hotel and airline software, corporate travel and expense tools, tour and activity marketplaces, and companies building on payments, data or AI-powered trip planning. Most are based in London, with smaller clusters in Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol. The sector was hit hard during the pandemic and rebounded quickly as demand returned, though the years since look mixed, with strong consumer demand sitting alongside rising costs and more cautious investors, even though interest in AI trip planning seems to be drawing fresh attention.

The buyer seems to shape almost everything. Travellers booking directly convert quickly, but acquisition costs are high and the global platforms dominate search. Hotels, airlines and tour operators offer steadier subscription revenue, though sales cycles are long and many still run on legacy systems. Corporate travel buyers want integration, duty of care and reporting, which can mean lengthy security and procurement reviews. Anyone selling packages also needs to think about ATOL licensing, ABTA membership and the Package Travel Regulations, which carry real financial protection duties, while seasonality, currency swings and shocks such as strikes or airspace closures make cash flow hard to predict.

My question is how founders win a first customer when the product is unproven, and which TravelTech niches they found most viable in the first couple of years. I would also like to know how people manage cash through seasonal dips, whether pilots with hotels, airlines or tour operators turned into paid contracts, how much the regulatory side added in cost and time, and whether SEIS, EIS or Innovate UK grants made a real difference early on. I have read something similar to this on Entrepreneur Plus, so I would like to hear from anyone who has built or worked in a travel company, what they found hardest, and whether anything caused friction during a later raise.
