Instead of stacking boards can I use a ribbon cable

stacking boards wont fit in my project, can someone recommend a cable that would work to connect the boards if there is one?

You could use out ribbon cable extender located here: Your project would still be at least 2 boards thick though, because the ribbon cable plugs into an adapter shield.
