Quote from: EbAngrous on December 17, 2024, 06:25:49 PMThe title pretty much says it all:  trying out my new TinyTV 2.  It's wonderful, as long as you like it to start each video at a random point when you change channels.  There is a setting for this, but not only does the setting not do anything, the device changes the settings file to its preferred setting of "true" every time.

If I set the randStartTime option in the settings.txt to false, it resets itself to true and I always get the random start behaviour.  The first time I look at the settings.txt file after turning it on to view, the file has changed back to its original randStartTime=true.  I edit the settings.txt on the device directly, it resets itself.  I edit it on my PC and copy the settings file to the device, it resets itself.  I try a power cycle between, no difference.  I try ejecting, power cycle, re-insertion, still reset.  The device itself seems to be opening the settings.txt file and writing randStartTime=true to its own configuration file, before starting to play, so I always get random start times.

What am I missing?  The specific little videos I'm using need to be seen from the start.
The idea is brilliant—scroll through mini "channels" of video content and enjoy a super nostalgic viewing experience. The display is crisp, the build is impressive for such a small device, and overall, it's a lot of fun. BUT... the way it handles video playback is incredibly frustrating.

Every time I switch channels, the video starts at a random point. That might sound quirky and fun at first, but it quickly becomes annoying, especially if you're trying to watch something in full from the beginning. There is a setting in the settings.txt file—randStartTime=false—that should, in theory, stop this behavior. The problem? The device completely ignores this setting.

It makes me wonder whether the encoding settings or compression method used in the TinyTV conversion process are less efficient for HiRes sources. In theory, reducing resolution should reduce the file size, not inflate it. Perhaps TinyTV uses a different codec or color space that adds overhead?
